As the war against cellulite rages on, numerous creams and lotions continue to emerge on the market to add to the arsenal of weapons. Cellulite creams have a number of star ingredients that claim once massaged into the skin will break up fatty deposits, relinquish excess fluid buildup and stimulate circulation to areas applied. Creams are a temporary fix to the cellulite problem that will give the illusion of smooth dimple free skin. It is important to keep in mind when choosing this option temporary option that often these creams are considered cosmetic and not medical. Medical grade creams are reviewed by the FDA for safety and efficacy and the majority cellulite creams are not.
Many ingredients have been instituted into creams and lotions in the pursuit of decreasing cellulite. Aminophylline, a medication known for its effectiveness in asthma, has the ability to relax certain muscles. It was initially thought to be able to breakdown fat cells and smooth skin when applied topically. Studies have come back with ambiguous results. Retinols are known for their efficacy in reducing wrinkles, but have made their way into the cellulite reduction world. They are thought to improve skin thickness and circulation when applied to the skin. Alpha Hydroxy Acid creams are slated to exfoliate the surface skin, increase cell turnover time, improve circulation in order to smooth and firm the skin. Unfortunately there are no studies to back up the claimed results of these creams.
Newer creams to the cosmetic market claim to have compounds of amino acids called peptides. These peptides will stimulate the skin to amplify and firm it. In addition some peptides will boost collagen production. As collagen is stimulated within the skin the outcome is visibly firmer smoother appearance, allowing the look of dimples and lumps to be diminished. Other topical products claim caffeine or chocolate in their lotions. These ingredients are said to stimulate an increase in circulation and beta endorphins. Beta endorphins speed up fat metabolism, thereby breaking up the fatty patches, making room for improved circulation and drainage. Improved circulation and lymphatic drainage will lead to smoother firmer surface skin. Some topical creams even claim the use of cayenne pepper. Cayenne pepper is reported to firm, tone and improve blood flow with its stimulating tissue abilities.
All topical products require applications to be followed diligently. Many require nighttime use as the skin is more receptive to skin stimulants. Several weeks to several months are needed for results to be seen. Costs for cellulite creams can range from $10 up into the $100s per tube. |
